When you apply for Life Insurance and are travelling to the Democratic Republic of Congo the insurer will want to know specific details, such as how long you intend to be in the region, the exact destinations you will visit and the purpose of your travel. It is possible that standard insurance providers could consider your application at standard terms, if your journey is less than 30 days.
For those visiting the DRC for more than 30 days, it is not possible to fully indicate the terms that you will be offered for Life Insurance as your application will be reviewed by the insurer based on their risk rating for the country on a case by case basis. If Life Insurance is available it is likely to be offered at non-standard terms in the form of a premium increase. For those who have travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the past you may be asked to undergo a Hepatitis and HIV test before the insurer will fully assess your application.
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Travel to the DRC may have little bearing on your Critical Illness application, if you are going to be in the region for less than 30 days. In this instance you may find that you are able to secure this policy at normal terms with specific insurers.
Critical Illness Cover when you travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo for more than 30 days at a time, will need to be placed with an insurance provider who can look favourably upon your application. Your application will be reviewed on an individual basis and terms of cover, if available, will be tailored to your specific circumstances. Where Critical Illness Cover is available it will be offered with some form of a premium increase, to offset the perceived risk of your intended travel. As above, you could be asked to take a Hepatitis and HIV test in order for the insurer to fully consider your application.
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income Protection for those travelling to the Democratic Republic of Congo should be placed with an insurer who can consider the application. The insurer will make particular note of whether your travel is related to your occupation and if so how often you will be required to visit the country. Small journeys of less than 30 days should not have a significant impact on your application.
Travel to the DRC of more than 30 days, could affect the terms of your Income Protection policy. Your application will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Any terms of cover that you are offered for Income Protection may be dependent upon you taking a Hepatitis and HIV test if you have visited the Democratic Republic of Congo before.
