Football & Life Insurance
Staying fit is important and playing football is a fantastic way to keep in shape. We have some footballers in our office, who like to play the odd game or two at the weekend!
Life insurance providers view regular exercise favourably, showing your commitment to keeping fit. While playing in football matches as a hobby typically doesn’t impact your life insurance, there are occasional instances where it might.
To double check this our advisers will ask you:
- How often do you play football?
- Do you take part in any professional competitions?
- Are any matches you play in the UK or abroad?
If football is your hobby, then life insurance should be available to you at standard terms in the UK. Playing in a local team or with friends is usually no issue at all. When football matches involve prize money at the end of competitions, this can sometimes be seen as bordering on playing football professionally. Our advisers will ask you all the necessary questions to find out if your hobby could be classified as amateur or professional.
If you are a professional football player, again, life insurance could be offered at standard terms. You may be travelling extensively within the UK and/or abroad to play in matches, so the travel aspect will be taken into consideration. Insurers will need to know how long you will be out of the UK for, and where you will be playing.
Our award winning advisers will find the best life insurance to meet your needs.
Football & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
If you play football on a weekend with friends or with a local team on a non-professional basis, again, you should be able to get standard terms for critical illness cover.
Frequent international football matches or being a professional footballer may alter your options for critical illness coverage. Most critical illness policies include something known as Total Permanent Disability (TPD), which means if your health changes and you can never do your job again the policy will pay out. This can be trickier for footballers because it doesn’t take much for you to have an injury that would mean you could never play football again.
If you are a professional footballer it is likely that Total Permanent Disability will not be included in your critical illness cover. But you should still be covered for the main claim areas of cancer, heart attack and stroke.
Our expert advisers will find the right insurer and best critical illness policy to match you and your hobby.
Football & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection may be available to you at normal terms with most insurers, if you do take part in football matches as a hobby. For income protection, the focus will be on your job, rather than your hobby.
If you play football professionally, then it is likely that you will need to approach a specialist insurer. This is because your work is so reliant on your physical fitness that it doesn’t take too much to have a career ending injury.
Our advisers will make sure that you are offered the best terms possible for income protection.
Football and Healthy Living Insurance
There are some insurance policies that allow you to earn rewards and reduce your policy premium, if you are fit an active. Being a footballer can be a perfect match to the way that the insurer monitors your fitness levels, so that you can access these benefits.

Football & Travel Insurance
Are you going abroad to play football? It’s a good idea to make sure that your travel insurance doesn’t have exclusions for playing football as a hobby or professionally, depending upon what you are doing. We suggest speaking with a specialist travel insurance broker. You can find more details on our travel insurance page.

Common Questions
Insurers look vary favourably on people doing regular exercise to stay fit, and generally if you are playing with your friends or in a local team, then you may be offered standard terms on your life insurance. You can even arrange insurance that can reward you with cheaper premiums and big discounts at UK retailers, if you are keeping fit.
Our advisers go through various questions with you about your health, career, hobbies and so on, so this answer will come up. In a nutshell, the insurers might need to know about your football if you play in competitions or traveling abroad, but most of the time it won’t come up in life insurance applications.
