BMX Riders & Life Insurance
BMX riding is brilliant and most of the time it’s completely safe, but there are some things that can make it a bit riskier.
Riding a BMX won’t usually come up in a life insurance application in the UK, but there is usually a question that’s very open asking about any extreme sports that you do.
Depending upon what you are doing, it might be that you need to declare it there. It’s even been suggested that BMX riding is the most dangerous Olympic sport, so there is a good reason as to why insurers can sometimes be a bit cautious if people are doing it.
To double check your life insurance options our advisers will ask you:
- How often are you riding?
- Do you take part in any BMX competitions?
- Is your BMX riding in the UK or abroad?
Most of the time if you are BMX riding as a hobby this shouldn’t affect your options for life insurance. You should be able to get life insurance at normal premiums.
If you are taking part in any form of professional competitions or are travelling abroad for BMX riding, you really need to find an insurer that can support what you do. When insurers do think that a sport someone is doing is quite risky they can increase the premiums quite a bit, so doing research across the UK market is essential in getting you life insurance at the best price.
Our award winning advisers will find the best life insurance to meet your needs.
BMX Riders & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover has a number of claimable conditions that are a higher risk due to BMX riding. This is things like paralysis, traumatic head injury and being in a coma. This can mean that your BMX riding does influence which insurer will be best for you.
The insurers will not often list BMX riding in their set of questions but they do have a question about any extreme sport. You might not be doing BMX riding to an extreme level, but it’s best to check directly with the insurer about your specific BMX riding. This means chatting to underwriters before your application is even submitted to make sure that you answer everything correctly.
There is a potential that you could get critical illness cover at standard terms with some insurers, if your BMX riding is non-competitive and you are not taking part in any extreme versions.
Our expert advisers will find the right insurer and best critical illness policy to match you and your hobby.
BMX Riders & Healthy Living Insurance
There are some insurance policies that allow you to earn rewards and reduce your policy premium, if you are fit and active. Being a golf player is a perfect match to the way that the insurer monitors your fitness levels, so that you can access these benefits.

BMX Riders & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
BMX riding can be seen as quite risky by income protection insurers. Insurers are quite cautious when it comes to income protection as it often doesn’t take much to happen health wise, for a person to have to take time off work.
Most people of working age are far more likely to claim on an income protection policy than life insurance or critical illness cover.
The insurers will assess your income protection application by looking at your occupation and your BMX riding. They will then have a think about how likely it is that you have an accident while doing BMX riding, and if you do have one how much it would stop you doing your work.
This might seem a bit odd so an example can help. If you are BMX riding and break your leg, it is not likely to stop you working for long if your job is based at a desk. If you are a yoga instructor though you could be off work for quite a while as your job is so reliant upon you doing physical stuff.
Many insurers are cautious about BMX riding and you can find that quite a lot of them will place an exclusion on your income protection policy for claims caused by your riding. Some insurers won’t be able to offer you income protection at all.
We have access to income protection providers who are not concerned about BMX riding and should be able to offer you income protection without any exclusions.
Our advisers will make sure that you are offered the best terms possible for income protection.
BMX Riders & Travel Insurance
Are you going abroad to BMX? It’s a good idea to make sure that your travel insurance doesn’t have exclusions for BMX riding. We suggest speaking with a specialist travel insurance broker. You can find more details on our travel insurance page.
