BASE Jumping & Life Insurance

BASE Jumping & Life InsuranceBASE jumping involves leaping off a high fixed object with a parachute and the distinct wing suit that is in this picture. You are far braver than I am!

BASE jumping is an exhilarating sport that is seen as risky by insurers. If you take part in BASE jumping, many insurers will need to know

  • What is the maximum height that you jump from?
  • How often do you BASE jump?
  • Do you BASE jump alone or do tandem BASE jumping?
  • Do you BASE jump outside of the UK?
  • Is BASE jumping your hobby or profession?
  • Do you take part in competitions?

Lovers of BASE jumping will know that even with all the safety steps you take this activity is high risk. You will more than likely need to approach a specialist insurer for your life insurance.

The reasons that insurers can be nervous about offering life insurance is because if something goes wrong with your jump, it’s quite likely that you will be seriously injured or potentially die. Because of the dangers involved in having an injury, you may find that the insurer will offer you non-standard terms for life insurance. This means that the premium will be increased due to you taking part in BASE jumping. This doesn’t always mean silly prices, but it’s worth knowing that you might not be able to get the basic premiums.

You may find that some insurers will decline your application. This can sometimes happen in what are considered to be dangerous sports, countries, jobs etc. Insurers do ask about any high risk sports that you are doing and even if they don’t list BASE jumping in their questions, some will leave the question quite open for you to volunteer this information.

Our award winning advisers will make sure that you answer the insurers questions correctly and find the best life insurance to meet your needs.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Critical Illness Cover may be available through a specialist insurer but it will be trickier to get with you BASE jumping. A lot of critical illness policies offer claims for total permanent disability, traumatic brain injuries, paralysis and comas. Insurers do see BASE jumping as significantly increasing your risk of these things happening.

It’s clear that this sport is seen as hazardous, and therefore there are some things that specialist insurers may do to be able to accept this risk. It may involved premium increases or exclusions, you do want to be very careful about exclusions on this type of policy as it can be quite extensive.

Unfortunately there will be some insurers that decline your critical illness cover application due to your BASE jumping.

Our expert advisers will find the right insurer and best critical illness policy to match you and your hobby.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Income Protection may be available at standard terms but with some exclusions on the policy related to BASE jumping. It will not be possible to arrange a personal income protection policy without exclusions relating to BASE jumping. There are some specialist policies that you might be able to access that won’t ask about your BASE jumping and we can help you to determine if you are eligible for these.

Because of the risks involved in the sport, it is also very likely that your application will be declined with many income protection providers.

Our advisers will make sure that you are offered the best terms possible for income protection.

There are some insurance policies that allow you to earn rewards and reduce your policy premium, if you are fit and active. Being a BASE jumper is a perfect match to the way that the insurer monitors your fitness levels, so that you can access these benefits.

Common Questions

Hi, that really depends upon the insurance that you have and if it has already started. If you already have life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection in place, then you don’t need to tell the insurer. That is assuming that you started BASE jumping after you took your policy out, with no intention of BASE jumping at the time that you took it out. If you are currently applying for these insurances then it’s essential that you read the application questions carefully and answer them as truthfully as possible, or your possible could be invalid.

If you are talking about travel insurance then it is best to speak to the insurer and/or a travel insurance broker who can advise you about this. With travel insurance it’s usually best to let the insurer know if you are going to take part in any extreme sports so that you can be confident that if something goes wrong, that you will be properly taken care of.
