MMA Fighters & Life Insurance
Alan (Cura, Managing Director) likes to take our kids kickboxing and they are all progressing their way up through the various grades of belts. Two of them are currently on their black belts and it’s great to see them being fit and active, as well as learning the discipline that comes with this kind of sport.
As a professional MMA fighter you are taking part in a sport that does come with more risks than sitting and doing a desk based job. There can be times that you wonder what would happen if something serious and you are injured, become critically ill and can never fight again, or the worst outcome of potentially dying.

To find the right life insurance policy for you we will ask you:

- How often are you taking part in matches?
- Are you based in the UK or abroad?
- Have you had any significant injuries in the last few years?
As a professional MMA Fighter, you should be able to get life insurance in the UK but you might find that some insurers are not able to offer you life insurance. This is because there is the concern that your work puts you at a higher risk of a significant injury or death. You might find that some insurers will increase the premiums for your life insurance, due to your MMA work, but life insurance is very very cheap so an increase usually doesn’t mean it becomes a silly price.
The key thing with your life insurance application is to make sure that your occupation is added correctly in the insurer’s systems. It is essential that the right occupation is chosen for you because they might not pay out a claim if the wrong occupation is put in.

MMA Fighters & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover for professional MMA Fighters can be possible, but again some insurers will be able to consider your application and some will not. When an insurer can consider offering you critical illness cover, you will likely find that they won’t include Total Permanent Disability on the cover. This is one claimable condition out of the many conditions you will be covered for (usually 60 or more!).
This means that the insurer will not payout if you become totally and permanently disabled under this type of insurance. The reason that they will not offer this is because there is a high risk that you could have an injury that stops you from ever working as an MMA Fighter again. There are other insurances that do this, that I will talk about later.
Do keep a close eye on critical illness terms that you are given. Some insurers might put on an occupational exclusion, this is very different to the one above. With this type of exclusion they will not pay out for any claim that happens when you’re at work. This can include heart attack, stroke, traumatic brain injury and more. It is a big exclusion and one that you want to avoid if possible. With an occupational exclusion the exclusion only applies whilst you are actively at work, so you will be able to claim on the policy as long as the condition you claim on isn’t related to your work.

MMA Fighters & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
For MMA Fighters, income protection is unfortunately not available. However there is an alternative.
We would suggest looking at a cover similar to income protection, called “Career Ending Injury Insurance”. With career ending injury insurance insurers would do some research about you, they’d want to know what your income is, as well as any injuries that you’ve had. The insurer would then arrange career ending injury insurance for you that would be a lump sum of money, if you have to stop your MMA work. This is usually calculated as a multiple of your salary.
