Erythrocytosis & Life Insurance

Erythrocytosis & Life InsuranceWhen you have a blood condition, insurers do like to ask you questions about it, to make sure that they fully understand your health.

The key thing for insurers is just to understand how well controlled your condition is and how much it is affecting you on a day to day basis.

To get things started we will ask you:

  • When were you diagnosed with erythrocytosis?
  • What treatment do you take for erythrocytosis?
  • What was your most recent hematocrit (Hct) level?
  • Are your symptoms of erythrocytosis well controlled?
  • Does the erythrocytosis affect your ability to work?

There are some insurers in the UK that can consider your application for life insurance when you are living with erythrocytosis, not all insurers can. It is likely that insurers that can consider your life insurance application will increase your premiums, due to your diagnosis.

Life insurance in general is incredibly cheap, so whilst an increase never sounds great, it is often nowhere near as bad as people think it will be.

There are insurers that can potentially consider your application without asking you about the erythrocytosis and without premium increases, but be careful, as these generally have extensive exclusions related to pre-existing health condition.

Our award winning advisers are here to give you peace of mind with the right life insurance policy, so that if the worst happens, your loved ones will be taken care of.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

It is unlikely that you will be able to arrange critical illness cover with mainstream insurers, when you have erythrocytosis. There are cancer only policies and different policies that can be arranged through your employer, that might be a potential for you.

Our expert advisers are trained to find the critical illness policy that matches you and your needs, so that if you are diagnosed with a critical illness, you can focus upon you rather than worrying about money.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Most full income protection policies will not be available when you have erythrocytosis. There can be options for what is known as short term or simplified income protection policies, depending upon the symptoms you experience and treatment that you have.

Protecting your income is one of the most important things that you can do to protect your financial future and our award winning advisers are here to sort it for you.

Are you going on holiday? It’s always a good idea to make sure that you have good travel insurance in place. You can find out more about getting a quote on our travel insurance page.

What is Erythrocytosis?

Erythrocystosis is diagnosed when there is a change to the JAK2 gene. The condition caused a higher amount of red blood cells in the blood, than is usual. This makes the blood thicker which can have an impact on the way organs and other parts of the body function.

Also: Polycythemia, apparent erythrocytosis, relative polycythaemia, absolute polycythaemia, primary erythrocytosis, secondary erythrocytosis, polycythemia vera,

Linked with: pulmonary embolism, stroke, heart attack, gout, high blood pressure, blood cancer, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), myelofibrosis, acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), kidney cancer

Some of the symptoms people may experience living with Erythrocytosis:

  • Excessive bruising
  • Exercise considerations
  • Headaches
  • Itchy skin
  • Medication side effects e.g. hair loss, flu like symptoms
  • Noisebleeds
  • Tiredness
  • Aspirin
  • Hydroxycarbamide
  • Interferon
  • Venesection

Common Questions

Hi, I’m sorry that you have been declined life insurance. The reason could be that the insurer you approached does not accept applications where polycythemia is disclosed. Or, it could be that the insurer has seen the report from your GP and has been unable to offer you life insurance following this.

When it comes to GP reports there can be a lot of information in there, that doesn’t seem to make much sense. There is also a lot of times where we find errors in GP reports and help people to get them corrected, so that they can get their life insurance. If you can share with us your medical records, we will go through this for you, discuss the reasons why we think the insurer declined your life insurance application, and make a plan going forward for you.

Excellent service to providing ideal solution to Company Health Insurance. Alan was patient, helpful and very knowledgeable about his products.
