Downs Syndrome & Life Insurance

Downs Syndrome & Life InsuranceLiving with Downs Syndrome often means that you need to have extra support with financial decisions.

We are sometimes contacted by parents of adult children, that are living with Downs Syndrome, that want to have some financial support if their child passes away.

We are able to provide advice in these situations if you hold an active financial Lasting Power of Attorney.  A key part of our advice is to establish what insurable interest there is and this is often linked to having a partner, child, a mortgage and some other things. If these are not the case, then we will probably limit our advice to amounts of insurance that are appropriate for funeral expenses and associated costs.

It is likely that options for traditional life insurance will not be available for someone that is living with Downs Syndrome.

You can go to our Buy Online options and see the types of the insurance that are currently available. The ‘EverydayProtect’ option offers a number of different accident based claims situations and some life insurance once the policy has been in place for 12 months.

If you are over the age of 50, you can see the options for ‘Over 50s’ cover that we have. These policies exclude claims relating to pre-existing conditions for the first 6 months to 2 years, that the policy is in place. The policies act as an accidental death insurance during this time and if you do pass away, any premiums you have paid in will be refunded to your loved ones.

You can also look at the ‘Guaranteed Life’ option, however, this policy will exclude any claims that are linked to Downs Syndrome and any other pre-existing conditions. This is quite an extensive exclusion, please read the terms and conditions carefully.

Our award winning advisers are here to give you peace of mind with the right life insurance policy, so that if the worst happens, your loved ones will be taken care of.

You will not be able to arrange a personal income protection policy within the UK, if you are living with Downs Syndrome. As an alternative you can look at a product known as Accident and Sickness Cover.

This policy is not income protection, but it does protect part of your monthly income if you are ill and unable to work. This type of policy is annually renewable and does exclude claims for pre-existing conditions. This means that they will not pay a claim if you are unable to work due to the Downs Syndrome, which is a very extensive exclusion, and something you should carefully consider.
