Dementia & Life Insurance
Being diagnosed with dementia is often a life altering time and there are many things that can suddenly seem very important. For some people, arranging life insurance becomes a priority.
Once you have a diagnosis of dementia, it is very unlikely that you will be able to arrange a traditional life insurance policy in the UK.
You can go to our Buy Online options and see what is currently available to you. The ‘EverydayProtect’ option offers a number of different accident based claims situations and some life insurance once the policy has been in place for 12 months.
If you are over the age of 50, you can see the options for ‘Over 50s’ cover that we have. These policies exclude claims relating to pre-existing conditions for the first 6 months to 2 years, that the policy is in place. The policies act as an accidental death insurance during this time and if you do pass away, any premiums you have paid in will be refunded to your loved ones.
You can also look at the ‘Guaranteed Life’ option, however, this policy will exclude any claims that are linked to dementia and any other pre-existing conditions. This is quite an extensive exclusion, please read the terms and conditions carefully.
Please be aware that if you would prefer to speak with one of advisers to arrange life insurance for someone that you know that has dementia, we may only be able to offer advice if you have a financial Lasting Power of Attorney in place.
Our award winning advisers are here to give you peace of mind with the right life insurance policy, so that if the worst happens, your loved ones will be taken care of.
Dementia & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
You will not be arrange to a arrange a personal critical illness policy in the UK if you are living with dementia. If you are under the age off 55, you might be able to access a cancer only policy.
There are sometimes options to arrange critical illness cover through your employer. These can be really good depending upon your circumstances, but please be aware that is very likely that the policy will exclude any claims that are related to your dementia.
Our expert advisers are trained to find the critical illness policy that matches you and your needs, so that if you are diagnosed with a critical illness, you can focus upon you rather than worrying about money.
Dementia & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
You will not be able to arrange a personal income protection policy within the UK, if you are living with dementia. As an alternative you can look at a product known as Accident and Sickness Cover.
This policy is not income protection, but it does protect part of your monthly income if you are ill and unable to work. This type of policy is annually renewable and does exclude claims for pre-existing conditions. This means that they will not pay a claim if you are unable to work due to the dementia, which is a very extensive exclusion, and something you should carefully consider.

Common Questions
Hi, thank you for getting in touch and sharing your situation with us. The cost of the life insurance will vary depending upon how old she is and how much cover you would like in place. It’s very likely that we will need to arrange a life insurance policy that is non-medically underwritten.
This is known as a guaranteed acceptance policy, where the policy is arranged without medical questions, but the insurer usually asks questions at the point of a claim. A good example of this is Over 50s cover. Most of the time you can set up the policy without them asking any health questions and they price everyone the same, for their age and the amount of life insurance taken out.
If there is a claim in the first 6 months to 2 years (depending on the insurer), they will then ask the cause of death. If it is due to an accident the life insurance will pay out. If the person has passed due to a medical reason, the life insurance does not pay out a claim, but the insurer refunds the premiums to you.
The best thing is for us to arrange a time to chat and we can go through the costs with you. We will need to see a Lasting Power of Attorney to be able to set the policy up for your mum.
