Kenya & Life Insurance
When you are planning on travelling to Kenya for a holiday, that epic safari that you have always wanted to, shouldn’t have a major impact on your life insurance application.
However, if you’re going for business or a holiday over 30 days, travelling to Kenya can potentially make a difference when finding the right life insurance policy.
To check your life insurance options we will ask:
- When are you travelling to Kenya?
- Is your trip to Kenya for a holiday or business?
- How long will you be staying in Kenya?
If your visit is a holiday lasting less than 30 days, life insurance is often available at standard terms. For longer stays—or work trips over 7 days—insurers may need more details from you, including the specific areas you’ll be visiting. Depending upon your situation this could lead the insurer to offer you standard terms for life insurance, a non-standard premium or even to postpone of decline your application for life insurance.
If you’re working offshore and planning on travelling to Kenya, do have a look at our dedicated occupation page for more tailored guidance.
It’s also worth noting that if you’ve spent a significant amount of time in Kenya in the past five years, insurers may ask you to complete a HIV test as part of your application.

British citizens who have moved abroad can often still access life insurance and critical illness cover in the UK. There are specific rules that you must follow to be eligible for new life insurance and critical illness policies, and we are here to strip out the jargon and get you the cover that you need.
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover may be available to you on standard terms, depending on the length of your stay in Kenya. Standard terms mean that there are no exclusions on the policy or any premium increases. Your critical illness options will depend upon how long you are in Kenya for and might change upon the are of Kenya you’ll be visiting.
If your trip to Kenya is less than 30 days, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get cover on normal terms. However, if you’ll be away for more than 30 days, or expect to travel frequently outside the UK over the coming year, it’s important to find an insurer who can accommodate your travel plans.
Our advisers know which insurers to place your application with so that you get the best terms for critical illness cover.
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection may be available at standard terms for people travelling to Kenya, as long as your visit is under 30 days and to a low-risk area.
Insurers will want to know if travelling abroad is part of your job, what work you’ll be doing while you’re there and where you’ll be based.
Our expert advisers will listen to your circumstances and let you know the best way to protect your income.
