Wrestlers & Life Insurance
When applying for life insurance, your insurer is always ready to understand how ‘healthy’ you as a person are. As a wrestler it is highly likely that you are very physically fit and this will be very positive to the insurers.
Usually there isn’t much concern about life insurance as an amateur wrestler, but sometimes there are things that will alter your life insurance options.
To double check this our advisers will ask you:
- How often are you wrestling?
- Do you take part in competitions?
- Are you wrestling in the UK or abroad?
- Are you ever paid or given prizes for your wrestling?
Life insurance should be available at standard terms by most UK insurers, when you are a non-professional wrestler.
Although, you may discover that BMI can alter the options that you have for life insurance. You probably have a high amount of muscle and your BMI can be seen as high and insurers still use this measure as a general guide for someone’s health. This doesn’t always work in people’s favour as muscle weighs more than fat, which can skew the BMI data the insurers are using. If you have a high BMI a quick chat with an underwriter to express that this is your fitness, not extra weight, may lower your premiums.
Insurers will probably look at life insurance applications more if you compete in competitions. Doing weekend competitions at your local village hall with your mates shouldn’t cause a problem. But the insurers can view things differently if the tournaments are prize based, as this can just tip their assessment of what you are doing into a more professional capacity.
If you travel abroad as a wrestler, insurers may look into you being classed as a professional wrestler. It really depends upon the type of competitions that you are taking part in and how often you are doing it.
There is absolutely no assumption on our part that you will have taken any drugs as part of your fitness journey, but it is important that we mention it as it can really change your choice of life insurance provider. Any performance enhancing drugs you may have taken in the past could change the life insurance options for you. You will probably be asked about drug usage in the past 10 years with most insurers, some will ask if you ever have. This doesn’t always mean you won’t get insurance with them, but research will be absolutely key in getting you the cheapest life insurance possible.
Our award winning advisers are here to give you peace of mind with the right life insurance policy, so that if the worst happens, your loved ones will be taken care of.
Wrestlers & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover should be available with most insurers if you are an amateur wrestler. With this type of policy insurers are looking for anything that could place you at a higher risk of making a claim.
Unfortunately there are some risk with wrestling, with you being more likely to develop Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinsons or Alzheimers, or a traumatic brain injury, and in some extreme cases you could be permanently paralysed. These are all claimable conditions on most critical illness policies and it can be why getting this type of insurance can be hard.
You may find some insurers will exclude total permanent disability on your policy as a claimable condition. Exclusions are never ideal but you are still covered for many key claimable conditions such as cancer, heart attack and strokes.
Our expert advisers are trained to find the critical illness policy that matches you and your needs, so that if you are diagnosed with a critical illness, you can focus upon you rather than worrying about money.
Wrestlers & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Wrestling might influence options of income protection if you have recent injuries. Recent as in the last 3-5 years. Its very common to have exclusions on income protection policies, as an example, if you tore your ACL in the last year, you will probably have an exclusion for claims relating to your leg.
It’s crucial your remember that income protection is about your main occupation and inability to work on that job. Think about exclusions in terms of working, not your capability to wrestle. If you can work with your leg injured again, then this exclusion probably isn’t a problem as you would not be claiming on the policy anyway.
Protecting your income is one of the most important things that you can do to protect your financial future and our award winning advisers are here to sort it for you.
