Wind Turbine Technican & Life Insurance
In your role it’s quite likely that you are going to be working at heights at times, this is something that life insurers can be a bit funny about.
There’s also a lot of people in the UK who work on offshore wind farms, which is another thing that insurers can be so so about!
When insurers consider life insurance applications they are double checking for any risks that could mean that you are more likely to claim on the policy. Working at heights, forms of travel to wind farms e.g. helicopters, and some locations in the world, can be seen as risky.
The key thing for you is to find the right insurer from the start, as some could increase your life insurance premiums quite considerably.
We will ask you:
- Is your work based in the UK or abroad?
- If you do travel abroad, what transport do you use to get to the windfarms?
- What height do you typically work at?
- What is the greatest height that you might work at?
Insurers are very aware of the amount of safety procedures and protocols that you need to follow as part of your work. That being said, it is still seen as more dangerous to be at the top of a wind turbine, than sitting behind a computer.
When a person starts to regularly work at heights over 12m (40ft), insurers tend to change the way that they price your life insurance. In some instances these price increases can be steep and it’s essential to research the market to find the insurer that will view your occupation most favourably – this is where we shine!
We know that quite a lot of people working offshore have their own limited companies and there are ways to arrange life insurance through your business. There are a few benefits of arranging life insurance this way and our advisers will explain these to you, so that you can make an informed decision.
Our advisers are here to help you find the right insurer to match your circumstances, to get you the best terms possible.
Wind Turbine Technican & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover applications are generally viewed more strictly by insurers, than life insurance. It is because statistically it’s far more likely that people will claim on this, than they will life insurance.
Critical illness cover often covers at least 60 different conditions and one of these is known as Total Permanent Disability. This claimable condition is focused upon your health changing for some reason that means you can never return to your work. It is highly likely that the insurer will exclude this condition from your critical illness cover.
There are different ways that this kind of exclusion is worded. It’s important to look at this very carefully as sometimes the exclusion will exclude more conditions than this, and when it does you really need to get your cover with a different insurer.
Our expert advisers will find the right critical illness policy to match your work.
Wind Turbine Technican & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection is a brilliant policy and there are lots of insurers and different styles of cover in the UK. Your occupation is seen as higher risk by most insurers. This is because you have to be fit and healthy to do your role and in some ways it wouldn’t take much for you to have to take some time off due to your health. By this I mean that if someone at a desk breaks their leg they will probably be back at work quite soon. For you, it could be a while before you can back to getting up the wind turbine.
The heights you work at and where in the world you are based, will have an influence upon the right kind of income protection policy for you. That’s the first part of getting income protection. The second is choosing the right insurer, as some will significantly increase your premiums due to your work and others won’t.
If you have your own company there can sometimes be a potential to arrange income protection cover through the business. This will depend upon your tax status. There can be benefits to arranging income protection this way, especially as there can be added consideration for your pension, which is not available through personal cover.
Our advisers recommend income protection for people every day and we will be able to let you know exactly what you can have. Get in touch today for a no obligation quotation.
