Veterinarian & Life Insurance

VeterinarianVeterinarians have plenty of knowledge on animal anatomy and the signs and symptoms of ill health. Yes, professionally this is focused on animals, but a lot of conditions can also be seen in humans to, so vets are often acutely aware of their own needs.

This is a big positive when it comes to insurance, as it often means that you know when you need to go to the doctor yourself, and get support. Early support is usually key in staving off serious medical conditions.

If you apply for life insurance insurers will ask many questions about your health as part of your application. Your insight into medicine, will give you a good start in understanding these questions and providing the correct answers early on.

Health changes can be viewed differently in the insurance world vs the medical world. So you may find that something that seems quite straightforward, or non serious to you, could be something that the insurers look at in more detail.

Just to double check the right life insurance options for you, our advisers may ask:

  • What are your specific work duties?
  • Do you need to operate heavy machinery?
  • Do you need to travel abroad?
  • Which countries are you required to visit as a veterinarian?
  • Do you ever need to fly by non-commercial plane or helicopter for your work?

Life insurance is generally available at standard terms with most insurance providers if you are a veterinarian. This means the life insurance should be offered at normal premiums.

As a veterinarian if you travel abroad as part of your occupation frequently, your life insurance could be affected. The cost of your life insurance may change if you travel outside the UK for more than a week at a time for work and/or depending upon the locations that you travel to.

Our award winning advisers are here to give you peace of mind with the right life insurance policy, so that if the worst happens, your loved ones will be taken care of.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Veterinarians should get critical illness cover at standard terms with most insurance providers in the UK. Your work isn’t seen as particularly risky at causing a claim on this type of insurance. However, there is one claimable condition known as Total Permanent Disability, that some insurers may not offer you as part of the critical illness claims set.

Our expert advisers are trained to find the critical illness policy that matches you and your needs, so that if you are diagnosed with a critical illness, you can focus upon you rather than worrying about money.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

As a veterinarian income protection policies should be available from many insurers in the UK.

Income protection policies are priced on the monthly benefit, the policies end date, the waiting period before the income protection kicks in and how long the claim will last. The brilliant thing is that you can build and tweak the insurance to match your needs.

You will find that some insurers find your work as a vet, to be risky. Essentially, the insurers are assessing how much your work is dependent upon your body and mind. As an example, if someone breaks their wrist and works in an office, they can often carry on working quite quickly with some support. However, if you break your wrist, you could be off work for quite a while, depending upon the work the specific jobs that you do and animals that you work with.

Insurers that see the occupation of veterinarian as risky, may charge a higher base premium for your income protection. We have access to specific insurers that won’t charge you more because of your work.

Protecting your income is one of the most important things that you can do to protect your financial future and our award winning advisers are here to sort it for you.

Superb service. Cura have been first class, helping putting in place protection policies for a self-employed person. They are friendly to deal with, are specialists in their field and obtained quotes that were very competitive. They always kept me up to date developments and I am very grateful for their work. - 5
