Surgeons & Life Insurance
As a surgeon you have some of the finest knowledge on how to live a healthy life and can spot if something needs to be checked out.
When applying for your life insurance many insurers will ask plenty of health questions, as a standard part of the application process. You are probably in a better position to answer these questions than most people.
However, some insurers can view health changes a bit differently to the medical world and this can sometimes cause some confusion. We are here to make sure that you understand each other and what is expected at each step of the application process.
Just to double check, our advisers may ask:
- What specific thing are you doing daily?
- Do you have a specific specialism?
- If travelling outside the UK as a surgeon, how long do you go for?
- If you do go abroad for work, where are you travelling to?
One extremely important extra for yourself is that you check if you get any death in service from the NHS. We have had many clients who have contracted out of their pension scheme and later found out that they are no longer entitled to death in service cover. If you are not sure, please speak to your Human Resources officer to confirm your employment benefits.
Life insurance is normally accepted at standard terms with many insurance providers if you are a surgeon. This means that your life insurance should come with normal premiums without your job affecting the price.
If you frequently travel outside the UK it can alter your life insurance options. The cost will depend on the countries that you travel to and why. For example, if you are travelling to an area of significant civil and political unrest, potentially war zones, some insurers may decline your life insurance application until you return to the UK.
Our award winning advisers are here to give you peace of mind with the right life insurance policy, so that if the worst happens, your loved ones will be taken care of.
Surgeons & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
You should be able to get income protection cover with most UK insurers, as a surgeon, plus an extra perk if you work in the NHS.
Income protection is priced based upon the monthly benefit, the policy’s end date, how long the claim will last for, and the waiting period before the insurance kicks in.
This is very important for surgeons working with the NHS, because you are likely to have a good sick pay package. Normally, NHS workers receive six months of full pay and six months of half pay when you are sick.
The faster the insurance gives you financial support, the more expensive it will be. Some insurers specifically want to say thank you to surgeons for the work that you do.
Traditionally with income protection you pay for a policy that will support you at 6 months and then more at 12 months, when your sick pay ends. If you work in the NHS some insurers offer you a cheaper option where you pay for the policy to support you from 12 months, but, they still give you financial support from 6 months. A much cheaper option for the same level of cover!
Protecting your income is one of the most important things that you can do to protect your financial future and our award winning advisers are here to sort it for you.
Surgeons & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
You should get critical illness cover at regular terms with most UK insurance providers, without any concerns about your occupation. Most occupational duties as a surgeon are seen as absolutely fine with insurers and not very risky for causing a critical illness claim.
You will most likely get standard premiums for your critical illness cover. This means no price increase or exclusions.
Our expert advisers are trained to find the critical illness policy that matches you and your needs, so that if you are diagnosed with a critical illness, you can focus upon you rather than worrying about money.
