Type 3c Diabetes & Life Insurance

Type 3c Diabetes & Life InsuranceBeing diagnosed with type 3c diabetes can be quite a long process and there can often be relief when you finally get answers for how you have been feeling.

We often speak to people when they have been diagnosed with a medical condition, as it’s these times that can lead us to think about future plans and life insurance.

To get things started we will ask you:

  • When were you diagnosed with type 3c diabetes?
  • What was the cause of you developing type 3c diabetes?
  • What is your current HbA1c?
  • What medications and treatments do you take?

When you apply for life insurance you will find that most insurers in the UK will ask about details of your type 3c diabetes. If they don’t, it’s likely that it’s a policy that excludes claims relating to pre-existing conditions, so do watch out for this.

You will find that most insurers will increase the price of your life insurance, above the basic premium they usually charge. This is because they will be looking at the fact that your pancreas has some damage and the long-term affects of the reduction in hormones that it products in your body.

Life insurance in itself is generally very cheap, so whilst a higher premium doesn’t sound great, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the premiums are going to be at a silly level.

Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

It’s likely that insurers will not offer you critical illness cover, with you having type 3c diabetes. This is because there are quite a few claimable conditions on the policy that can be linked to your pancreas and to long-term affects of diabetes.

There are some specialist policies that you can potentially access, but there are strict eligibility criteria which our advisers can go through with you.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

When you apply for income protection it is really common to get exclusions for pre-existing conditions. As you have diabetes and your pancreas is not producing hormones at the normal levels, this can mean that some insurers will decline your application for income protection, they will not give the option for you to have the policy with an exclusion.

But there are also some specialist income protection options that you might be able to access, that can cover you for claims relating to your pre-existing conditions. This is highly dependent upon how well controlled your diabetes is and your employment status.

Our advisers are here to make sure that you get the best insurance policy to protect your income.

Are you going on holiday? It’s always a good idea to make sure that you have good travel insurance in place. You can find out more about getting a quote on our travel insurance page.

What is Type 3c Diabetes?

Type 3c diabetes can develop following an illness or developing a condition that affects the pancreas. When the pancreas is damaged or removed it significantly affects the level of insulin that is produced in your body, which is when type 3c diabetes can occur. As well as not producing insulin, people with type 3c diabetes also do not fully produce many of the hormones from the pancreas that are essential to regulating the body.

Also: Pancreatogenic diabetes mellitus, diabetes related to disorders of the pancreas, secondary diabetes

Linked with: Pancreatitis, diabetes, pancreatic cancer, cystic fibrosis, haemochromatosis

Some of the symptoms people may experience living with type 3c diabetes:

  • Blurred vision
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling thirsty
  • Frequent wing
  • Reduced alcohol intake
  • Stomach pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Insulin
  • Metformin
  • Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT)

Common Questions

Hi, thank you for getting in touch and I hope that you are ok after getting your diagnosis. Updating your insurance really depends upon the type of insurance that you have. If you have life insurance, critical illness cover or income protection, and had no symptoms or indication that you had type 3c diabetes when you applied for the cover, then there usually isn’t a need to update the insurer.

This is because most of these policies are based upon your health on the day the insurance starts. Changes to your health after the start date do not generally affect the terms. However, if there is any chance that the policy was started whilst you were undergoing investigations or experiencing symptoms, or around the time of your diagnosis or after, then this would likely be something that should have been included in your insurance application.

I would be happy to talk through these timings and look through your insurance documents for you, to help make sure that everything is set up correctly.
