Raynaud's & Life Insurance

Raynauds and Life Insurance

Raynaud’s is an auto-immune condition that can affect people in various parts of their body in particular the extremities, such as fingers and toes.

Insurers will be interested to know how much Raynaud’s affects your day-to-day life and how much you are able to do every day tasks, including work ones too.

Our advisers will need to know about these, if you have any, and will ask you questions such as:

  • Has your doctor confirmed you have Raynaud’s?
  • Where does Raynaud’s affect you on your body eg fingers, toes, ears, nipples?
  • Do you have other health conditions that are linked to Raynaud’s?

If you’re looking for life insurance and you’ve got Raynaud’s, you might get life insurance at standard rates with quite a few insurers. Sometimes people with Raynaud’s have other health conditions that can change the options that you have for life insurance. If this is the case then life insurance is often still possible but you may find that the insurer changes the premium that you pay for the insurance.

Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

If you have Raynaud’s and you are looking at taking out critical illness insurance, it is likely that insurers will offer you standard terms. This means no price increases or exclusions. Insurers will probably ask you a few questions about how much Raynaud’s affects your daily life.

As with life insurance above, it is common for people with Raynaud’s to have related health conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. If this is the case then the insurers will likely assess your application with more focus upon the one of these conditions. You can find out more about critical illness options with these conditions in our full health condition list.

Our award winning advisers are here to make sure that you get the right insurer to match you and your health.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

As with life insurance and critical illness insurance,  with a diagnosis of just Raynaud’s you might be able to get income protection at standard terms. This will depend on how much Raynaud’s or any health-related conditions affect your ability to work and carry out work tasks. You may find that there could be an increase in the premium, or some exclusions on the policy, if the Raynaud’s has caused you to recently have time off work or causes you difficulties with day to day tasks.

If you have Raynaud’s and another condition such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, the insurer will assess your application for income protection with more focus on these connected conditions. You can find out more details about how these conditions are viewed for income protection in our dedicated health condition list.

Our advisers are here to make sure that you get the best insurance policy to protect your income.

Do you have Raynaud’s and are you planning a trip abroad? It’s a good idea to speak with a specialist travel insurance broker, that can explain exactly what you are covered for when it comes to Raynaud’s. You can find out more about getting a quote on our travel insurance page.

What is Raynaud's?

Raynaud’s phenomenon is common and doesn’t usually cause any major problems. It’s where there is an issue of blood flowing to the extremities, such as the fingers and toes. These can change colour if you’re cold, anxious or stressed, so it’s best to keep as warm as you can, and avoid high fluctuations in temperature. Other areas of the body may have similar symptoms too.

Sometimes Raynaud’s can be caused by working with vibrating machinery for a long time or by taking certain medicines. The symptoms can last either a few minutes or even a few hours. Raynaud’s is an auto-immune condition and in some cases can be linked to other health conditions.

Linked with: Scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogrens syndrome, Lupus, atherosclerosis, Buerger’s disease

Some of the symptoms people may experience living with Raynaud’s:

  • Fastening/unfastening buttons
  • Locking the door with a key
  • Need for specialist warm clothing
  • Zipping/unzipping purse
  •  ACE Inhibitors
  • Beta blockers eg Simvastatin
  • Diltiazem
  • Iloprost
  • Losartan
  • Nifedipine
  • Sildenafil

Common Questions

Hi, and thanks for your question. So, the main thing the insurer will want to know is if your Raynaud’s affects your work and carrying out work tasks. If the answer is no, then you might be able to get Income Protection at standard terms. If your Raynaud’s does affect your work, then there may be some slight premium increases, and in some situations exclusions on the policy. It’s best to go through this with an adviser though, who can better advise you and select the most appropriate insurer for your circumstances.

5/5 Service - highly recommend. I received a friendly, professional service. When I could not talk due to work commitments, calls were rearranged with no fuss for a more convenient time. Questions were answered and the various stages from initial consultation to policy issue were prompt. - 5
