Type 2 Neurofibromatosis & Life Insurance

We understand that having neurofibromatosis type 2 can be difficult to adjust to, symptoms often become more active as you get older, and you suddenly need to adapt to a new way of life. Symptoms of NF type 2 can vary greatly from person to person, and we are here to help you figure out exactly what the insurers need to know about you.

Things we need to know:

  • When were you diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)?
  • What medications and treatment do you take?
  • Do you use mobility aids?
  • Are you able to work?
  • How many neurofibromas do you have?
  • Have you had surgery to remove any tumours?

When you apply for Life Insurance, neurofibromatosis type 2 will need to be fully declared to the insurer, who will ask to see a report from your GP. Your doctor will be asked to detail the severity of your NF type 2, by describing how many tumours you have, how many tumours have been removed, how quickly the tumours develop and any other medical conditions and treatments that you have in relation to the neurofibromatosis. Your Life Insurance application will likely be accepted at non-standard terms, in way of a price increase. If you are having difficulty finding Life Insurance on the standard insurance market due to the NF2, there are specialist policies that you can apply for.

It is likely that any insurance that you apply for on the standard market, will need to be reviewed by the insurers Chief Medical Officer, on a case by case basis.

Critical Illness Cover for people with neurofibromatosis type 2 will be assessed on the details of a report from your GP. Any offer for Critical Illness Insurance that is made to you will be at special terms and will be directly linked to the severity of past and present tumours, the speed at which your tumours progress and any related secondary conditions that have developed. Your Critical Illness Cover may come with a deafness exclusion, as there is a high risk of loss of hearing due to you having neurofibromatosis.

Income Protection for those with neurofibromatosis type 2 may be available at non-standard terms. The offer of Income Protection that you are given, will be based upon your doctors report detailing your current health and past medical history. If your symptoms of NF2 are more advanced, you may find that your application for Income Protection is declined.

People with neurofibromatosis that are unable to have Income Protection could consider Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover instead. This policy type offers a monthly income replacement for 12 to 24 months, if you are unable to work due to ill health or involuntary redundancy. Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover is not medically underwritten, so you will be accepted for the policy without having to detail your NF type 2 diagnosis. However it is important that you are aware, that the policy will exclude any claims related to your neurofibromatosis.

Planning a trip abroad? For added peace of mind, it can be a good idea to speak with a specialist travel insurance broker, that can get you the right cover in place. For more details please see our travel insurance page here.

Common Questions

It depends on what you see as an issue. For life insurance, loss of hearing when you have NF, is not going to make a huge difference. When it comes to Critical Illness Cover and Income Protection, you may find that there are exclusions place on the policy for deafness related claims. We don’t see this as an issue, as there are still many health conditions that you could claim for on the policies.

You have a few options. You may have been declined/refused life insurance because the symptoms of your neurofibromatosis are too advanced, to meet the insurers criteria. There could be other insurers on the standard market that can offer you life insurance, but it may be that you need to speak with a specialist insurer that can accept application from people with neurofibromatosis.
