Narcolepsy & Life Insurance
Narcolepsy is a condition that will likely be asked about by most life insurance providers in the UK. The good news is that if your narcolepsy is well controlled, there should be plenty of options for you.
To start our research for you we will likely ask you:
- When were you diagnosed with narcolepsy?
- Do you know the cause of your narcolepsy?
- What medications do you take for narcolepsy?
- Are you able to work?
- Are you able to drive?
The driving question is one that doesn’t tend to be asked by insurers, but we might ask you, as it can give us a good idea as to how the underwriters might view your application for life insurance.
It is possible to find life insurance at standard terms when you are living with narcolepsy, if your symptoms are well controlled and it’s not affecting your ability to do normal day to day activities.
If your narcolepsy is impacting your daily life and ability to work, it could be that insurers offer you life insurance at an increased premium. In some cases it might be that your life insurance application needs to be placed with a specialist insurer.
Our award winning advisers are here to give you peace of mind with the right life insurance policy, so that if the worst happens, your loved ones will be taken care of.
Narcolepsy & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover may also be available at normal terms, depending upon how much your symptoms impact your daily life. Some insurers will increase the premium for your critical illness cover, due to the narcolepsy.
Our expert advisers are trained to find the critical illness policy that matches you and your needs, so that if you are diagnosed with a critical illness, you can focus upon you rather than worrying about money.
Narcolepsy & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Most insurers will decline applications for full income protection, for people that have been diagnosed with narcolepsy. There are some insurers that can potentially consider your income protection application, but they usually say that it is very borderline as to whether they will be able to offer this to you after seeing a report from your GP.
There are some income protection policies that should be available to you that offer shorter claim periods – a maximum 1, 2 or 5 year claim. It’s definitely worth having a look and seeing if these are an option for you.
Protecting your income is one of the most important things that you can do to protect your financial future and our award winning advisers are here to sort it for you.

What is Narcolepsy?
Narcolepsy is caused by a chemical in the brain, not working exactly as it should. Hypocretin (orexin) is the chemical that alerts us to being awake or needing to go to sleep and people living with narcolepsy have too little of this chemical. For some people it is believed that narcolepsy is caused by an autoimmune response, but this does not apply to everyone.
Also: Secondary narcolepsy
Linked with: Menopause, major stress, head injury, brain tumour, multiple sclerosis, encephalitis

Common Questions
Hi, we would be delighted to help. Having narcolepsy can sometimes make getting life insurance a bit harder, than for someone who does not have the condition. The main reason for this is because the insurer will want to see a report from you GP about your health, so it takes a little longer to go through the application process.
We will support you the entire time and make sure that your life insurance goes to the right insurer for you.
