COPD & Life Insurance
When you are living with COPD you will find that most insurers have questions about this, when you apply for life insurance. The insurer just wants to check how the COPD is affecting you and overall health.
There are many things about your circumstances and your COPD that could alter which insurer is going to be best for you.
To get things started we will ask you:
- When were you diagnosed with COPD?
- What treatments do you take for COPD?
- What symptoms do you experience of COPD?
- Are you currently using any form of nicotine products or nicotine-free vapes?
- Do you have any outstanding tests or investigations?
When you apply for life insurance it is likely that any terms you are offered are what is known as non-standard terms. This means that the insurer has increased the cost of the life insurance above their normal premiums, due to having COPD. This doesn’t mean that you are going to be paying a ridiculous premium for your life insurance, but it is important to be aware that the premium you first see when you apply for life insurance is unlikely to what is offered after underwriting has taken place.
If you are currently a smoker you will find that your life insurance policy needs to be placed with more specialist insurers that can consider your application. It can be quite tricky with insurance as they will class you as a smoker for any nicotine based product that you use, so if you don’t smoke cigarettes and use nicotine patches, you are still classed as a smoker. Life insurance with the specialist insurers can be a potential option for you, but it generally is not the cheapest option.
There are some life insurance products where this change of premium doesn’t happen. These are often quite easy to arrange and don’t go into a lot of medical information, but they usually include quite extensive exclusions and it is essential that you understand what these are.
Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.
COPD & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
When you have COPD it is unlikely that you will be able to arrange critical illness cover with most insurers. You will find that any options for critical illness cover will exclude claims that are related to the COPD.

COPD & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
When you apply for income protection you will need to place your application with a specific insurer that can consider your cover. Many mainstream insurers will not be able to accept your application for income protection.
With any personal income protection policy that you arrange there will be exclusions for any claims relating to your COPD. There are sometimes options that don’t have exclusions, these are potentially available through your employer.
