Brugada Syndrome & Life Insurance

Brugada Syndrome & Life InsuranceWhen you have a heart condition, it can be quite daunting to know where the best place is to start for life insurance.

We completely understand this as it can be hard to know exactly what the insurers are going to ask and make sure that you answer all the technical medical questions correctly. We’re here for you and we do this day in day out, so you can be sure you’re in safe hands.

To get things started we will ask you:

  • When were you diagnosed with Brugada syndrome?
  • What type of Brugada syndrome do you have?
  • What symptoms do you experience?
  • Have you had surgery for Brugada syndrome?
  • Is your Brugada syndrome due to a genetic link, or another reason?

Your options for life insurance will greatly depend upon the type of Brugada syndrome that you have. Some insurers will only consider applications from people that have had an ICD fitted.

People living with Type 2 Brugada syndrome will find that most insurers decline their life insurance application, the key thing here is that it’s most, not all. Where life insurance is a potential it is very likely that the insurer will increase the premium due to your diagnosis, but, these increases are often far less than people expect so it’s always worth asking.

Type 2 and Type 3 Brugada syndrome tend to have quite a few more options for life insurance. More insurers are often willing to consider the life insurance application and in some cases potentially at standard rates – no premium increase.

Insurers are very picky about heart conditions and smoking, this also include nicotine free ecigs. You could find that you need to approach a specialist insurer for your life insurance, if you are a smoker.

Our award winning advisers are here to give you peace of mind with the right life insurance policy, so that if the worst happens, your loved ones will be taken care of.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

There are potential options for critical illness cover, for people that are diagnosed with Type 2 or Type 3 Brugada syndrome. This will be highly dependent upon the symptoms that you experience. You may find that a condition known as Total Permanent Disability is not available on your critical illness cover.

Unfortunately there are no options for critical illness cover when you have Type 1 Brugada syndrome, in the personal UK life insurance market. The best option that you can have is through an employer funded critical illness policy, but this will come with exclusions that can be quite extensive.

Our expert advisers are trained to find the critical illness policy that matches you and your needs, so that if you are diagnosed with a critical illness, you can focus upon you rather than worrying about money.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

There are lots of ways to set up income protection and the good news is that there can be options for people living with Brugada syndrome. Income protection is an insurance type that generally excludes claims for pre-existing conditions, so it’s important to be aware of that before you decide if you want this insurance.

Full income protection policies have the potential to pay a person’s income continuously to their retirement age. It’s likely that when you have Brugada syndrome that your options for income protection will be with shorter claim periods: 1, 2 or 5 years per claimable event.

Protecting your income is one of the most important things that you can do to protect your financial future and our award winning advisers are here to sort it for you.

Are you going on holiday? It’s always a good idea to make sure that you have good travel insurance in place. You can find out more about getting a quote on our travel insurance page.

Common Questions

Hi, I’m really sorry to hear that this has been your experience of insurance so far. We do have insurers that can consider applications for people with Brugada syndrome diagnosis, depending upon cause, symptoms and treatments that have been had.

Each insurer has a manual that says yes or no, depending upon the answers that people put in their application. Unfortunately some insurers simply do not accept applications from people with this condition, mainly if it is Type 1.

After speaking with you we will be able to let you know which insurer will be right for you, so that you can get your life insurance in place.

Review by Frances and Jonathan on 26th September 2024

Great service. Would recommend. Fantastic service. Real attention paid to what type of cover we needed. The team responded quickly and clearly to any questions we had, and liaised with underwriters to ensure some non-straightforward medical information was accurately reflected in our applications. I would highly recommend Cura. We will be using them again for any future life insurance needs. - 5
