Acute Myeloid Leukaemia & Life Insurance
When you have had cancer there can be quite a bit of uncertainty about whether you can or cannot get life insurance.
The good news is that most people should be able to get life insurance with mainstream insurers, once a bit of time has passed since you have recovered from the AML.
Your options for life insurance will be dependent upon quite a few parts of your cancer diagnosis.
To get things started we will ask you:
- What type of AML were you diagnosed with?
- When were you diagnosed with AML?
- What treatment did you have for AML?
- When did your treatment for AML end?
Most insurers will want there to be some time from when you last had treatment for AML and you putting a life insurance application to them. A year is often a minimum timeframe, but this does depend upon the type of acute myeloid leukaemia that you had and your treatment.
If you had AML in childhood or as a young adult, it might be that you are able to arrange life insurance at standard terms (the normal pricing). This is most likely when there has been quite a long period of time since you had cancer (10 years or more).
There are some specialist policies that can be arranged before this time, some life insurances can be arranged while you still have AML, but it is essential that you fully check the terms and conditions of these policies. If you actively have cancer or have recently stopped treatment, your options for life insurance will usually exclude claims relating to cancer, which is quite a big exclusion to have.
Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.
Acute Myeloid Leukaemia & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
You might be able to arrange critical illness cover if you have previously been diagnosed with AML. This is highly dependent upon the type of AML you had, how long ago you were diagnosed with cancer and your treatment too. If an insurer is able to consider your application for critical illness cover, it is quite likely that there will be a full cancer exclusion on the policy.

Acute Myeloid Leukaemia & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
You can find that income protection is a better option for you than critical illness cover, depending upon your situation. This is because there is the potential of arranging income protection without any exclusions, if your cancer diagnosis and treatment were a good while ago.
It might be that for the moment your best option for income protection comes with an exclusion, but once a bit more time has passed since you recovered from the cancer, more options become available that don’t have exclusions.

What is Acute Myeloid Leukaemia?
Acute Myeloid Leukaemia is diagnosed when the white blood cells in our body, don’t work as they should (sometimes it’s the red blood cells). When these cells don’t work properly it means that oxygen and other essential parts of our blood, don’t flow properly through the rest of our body. This means that our organs and others parts of our body have a harder time, to keep our body functioning as it should do.

“What more can I say? - Just superb. Excellent personalised customer service from advisors that really seem to care and treat every individual as a person with their own important needs. Noone is disrespected which matters greatly. And Cura go out of their way to be inclusive and make every customer feel as valued as possible while identifying the right products and providers to suit. I would recommend to anyone with a disability or medical condition.” - 5
