Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia & Life Insurance
When you have had cancer, there can be a lot of uncertainty about what insurances you can and cannot have.
Your ability to get life insurance after you have experienced ALL, is heavily influenced upon when you had cancer and what treatments you needed.
For some people it can be possible to arrange life insurance at normal terms, the basic premiums. But, there are times when this is not possible.
To check your life insurance options, we’ll need to know:
- When were you diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukaemia?
- What treatments have you received for ALL?
- Have you had a bone marrow or stem call transplant?
- When did your treatments end?
- Have you had any recurrence of cancer?
When it has been quite some time since you had ALL there is the potential to arrange life insurance at standard terms. If you needed to have a bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant, you can find that life insurance premiums might be a bit higher for you, a little while longer than someone who did not need this treatment.
If you have had a recurrence of cancer, this can mean that a more specialist life insurer is best suited to you.
Our expert advisers are here to ensure your policy is matched with the best possible insurer for your needs.
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover applications are viewed a bit differently to life insurance, as you have had cancer in the past and this type of policy covers claims for cancer. This does mean that most insurers are likely to place a blood cancer exclusion on your policy, there are some that could exclude all cancers. Research is essential.
Your options for critical illness cover will best once you are 10 to 20 years post diagnosis and treatment.
If you needed a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, or have had a recurrence of cancer, it’s unlikely that insurers will be able to offer you critical illness cover. There are policies that can be arranged quite easily, but these are very restricted and have extensive exclusions, please be very careful if any insurance you are applying for seems to good to be true.
There are some potential critical illness cover policies that can be arranged through employers that might be available to you.

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection is another policy that can be a bit trickier to get than life insurance. Insurers are quite quick to put exclusions on income protection policies, as statistically the majority of people are far more likely to claim on this than life insurance.
Your options for income protection will again be very dependent upon the time since your diagnosis of ALL and treatment ending. There are some times options to arrange income protection for people that have experienced ALL, without an exclusion.
Quite a lot of people see income protection and critical illness cover as an either or, even though this isn’t the case and they compliment each other. However, if you are in an either or decision process, you might find that income protection is far better for you than critical illness cover, when it comes to exclusions.
Our advisers are here to help you find the best insurance policy to safeguard your income.
