Weight Loss Drugs & Life Insurance

Weight Loss Drugs & Life InsuranceWeight loss drugs are proving to be a useful tool to help people lose excess weight. They are being used by millions of people who are taking steps to try and get their weight back into a healthy range.

When it comes to insurance, weight loss drugs can get a bit of a mixed reaction. This is because insurers usually base their decisions upon decades worth of medical data. They like to be able to look at a situation and say ‘well if people take this medication, we can comfortably say that in 30 years time it will have had done nothing or xyz to the majority of people’.

Insurers don’t have that data yet, so there has been some caution, but insurers are moving quickly to update their positions.

To get things started we will ask you:

  • When did you start taking weight loss drugs?
  • What was your weight when you started taking weight loss drugs?
  • Which weight loss drug have you taken?
  • What is your current weight now?
  • Are you still taking weight loss drugs?
  • Do you have any medical conditions such as diabetes or heart disease?

These questions help us to build a picture of what life insurance options will be available to you.

Life insurance might be available at normal terms, or potentially at a higher premium. There are a lot of different scenarios to be considered, here are a few of them.

If your BMI was over 40 and you have type 2 diabetes, then it’s likely that your premiums for life insurance will be higher due to your diabetes. Assuming that your BMI is now below 40 it might still cause the premiums to be increased, but you may not see an increase due to your weight if your BMI is now below 30.

If you had a higher BMI and your weight is now in the ‘healthy’ ranges, you may find that you can access life insurance at normal terms with some insurers. But, you may also find that some insurers still increase your premium a little. This is because some data is showing that some people put back on about half of the weight they have lost, when they stop taking the medication.

You can find that some insurers postpone applications for life insurance if you are still taking weight loss drugs. They are usually waiting to see what your weight is when you finish taking the weight loss drugs and if it stays stable over time.

If you were already a healthy BMI when you started taking weight loss drugs, it’s likely that the insurer postpones or declines your life insurance, as there does become a point where insurers view BMI’s as too low.

This is a very complex areas that is evolving as more longer term data is becoming available.

Our award winning advisers are here to give you peace of mind with the right life insurance policy, so that if the worst happens, your loved ones will be taken care of.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

As with life insurance you might find that critical illness cover is offered to you at normal terms, at an increased premium, or potentially postponed or declined with some insurers.

This really does depend upon your individual circumstances. Some of the uncommon side effects of taking weight loss drugs would increase your risk of claiming on a critical illness policy. As there is still so little data related to the long term side effects of weight loss drugs, insurers are being cautious, especially with the side effects that are already being seen.

Your options for critical illness cover will depend upon any medical conditions that you have, how long you have been taking weight loss medication for and your current weight.

Our expert advisers are trained to find the critical illness policy that matches you and your needs, so that if you are diagnosed with a critical illness, you can focus upon you rather than worrying about money.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

When you apply for income protection, taking weight loss drugs could come up in the application questions.  Income protection is a type of policy where it’s quite common to have exclusions placed on the policy, the good news is that you are not likely to see exclusions for taking weight loss drugs.

However, if you have a medical condition such as diabetes, sleep apnoea or heart disease, you can find that they will lead to exclusions on the policy.

You might be able to arrange income protection cover at normal terms or at an increased premium, based upon your own individual circumstances.

Protecting your income is one of the most important things that you can do to protect your financial future and our award winning advisers are here to sort it for you.

Common Questions

Hi, it’s lovely to hear from you. Telling your insurer depends upon what insurance you have or are intending to take out. If you are planning on applying for life insurance, critical illness cover or income protection in the UK, the majority of insurers have applications where you would need to include taking mounjaro.

If you already have these insurances in place, then you might not need to tell your insurer. If your insurance was set up before taking mounjaro and you had no intention of taking it when you started the policy, then you might not need to tell the insurer.

There can be benefits to reviewing your cover if you have taken mounjaro since setting up a policy like life insurance. The reason being is that if your BMI used to be higher, you are probably paying a higher premium. If your BMI is now lower, you may be able to access a much cheaper life insurance policy.
