Senegal & Life Insurance
When travelling to Senegal for a holiday there can be potential implications for your life insurance application.
For any work trips over 7 days or holidays longer than 30 days, insurers will want to know a lot more about your journey to Senegal.
This is quite a standard process with UK insurers as part of their eligibility criteria is that you are a UK resident, so if you are out of the country for a while they can just want to double check that you can actually take out life insurance with them.
To check your life insurance options we will ask:
- How long is your stay to Senegal?
- Is it a holiday or work-based trip?
- Where in Senegal will you stay?
If your visit to Senegal is a holiday that is under 30 days, you may be able to get standard terms for life insurance, with some insurers.
Longer stays or work trips over a week could result in some more questions coming your way. It is quite likely that your life insurance will be offered at a higher premium in this instance, due to the current perceived risks of traveling to Senegal. It is possible that some insurers will decline your life insurance application, at which point we will approach specialist insurers for you.
Insurers are constantly watching potential travel risks for different countries and options for life insurance can change quickly.
You should know that if you have spent a long period of time in Senegal in the past five years, you may be asked to have a HIV test, as part of your life insurance application. .

British citizens who have moved abroad can often still access life insurance and critical illness cover in the UK. There are specific rules that you must follow to be eligible for new life insurance and critical illness policies, and we are here to strip out the jargon and get you the cover that you need.
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover can be at standard terms, as long as you don’t stay too long in Senegal. Standard terms means no premium increases and no exclusions on your policy. But, your critical illness cover application must be placed with an insurer that is ok with your travel to Senegal.
If your stay in Senegal is less than 30 days, there’s a high likelihood you will get cover on regular terms. If you’ll be in Senegal for over 30 days, or expect to travel lots outside the UK over a 12 month period, you can find that insurers start to increase your policy premiums and in some instances decline your application.
Our expert advisers are trained to find the critical illness policy that matches you and your needs, so that if you are diagnosed with a critical illness, you can focus upon you rather than worrying about money.
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection may be available at normal terms for people travelling to Senegal, as long as your stay is less than 30 days.
Insurers will want to know if your travel is occupation related or a holiday. Most of the time you need to be a UK resident to arrange an income protection policy in the UK, which includes paying tax here. If there is anything that suggests that this isn’t the case, the insurer might ask for proof of your tax status and residency.
Protecting your income is one of the most important things that you can do to protect your financial future and our award winning advisers are here to sort it for you.
