Pre-Diabetes & Life Insurance
We understand that being told you have pre-diabetes can be concerning. While it’s not a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, it does mean you’re blood sugar is higher than the ideal amount.
The good news is that having pre-diabetes doesn’t automatically mean limited options for life insurance. In fact, many insurers can still offer policies—often without significant barriers—depending on how your overall health is.
To get things started we will ask you:
- When were you diagnosed with pre-diabetes?
- What is your most recent HbA1c reading?
- What are your blood pressure and cholesterol levels?
- What is your height and weight (BMI)?
- Which medications or lifestyle changes have been recommended by your GP?
While pre-diabetes is not the same as type 2 diabetes, many insurers will assess your application using similar criteria—particularly your HbA1c level and any associated risk factors. If your latest HbA1c reading is within a healthy range and there are no other medical concerns, some insurers may even consider cover at standard rates. This is most likely if your HbA1C is lower than 42mmol/mol.
However, if your readings are closer to the diabetic range or you’re on certain medications (including weight-loss treatments like Ozempic or Mounjaro), your options may vary. In these cases, your application might be referred to underwriting, and the insurer could request a GP report to better understand your current health.
This is a routine part of the process and often works to your advantage—ensuring the insurer has up-to-date and accurate information before making a decision.

Pre-Diabetes & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
It is possible to get critical illness cover if you have pre-diabetes, but you’ll need to meet certain criteria set by the insurer. The application process is similar to that for life insurance and may involve the insurer contacting your GP for up-to-date medical information.
Your options for critical illness cover might come with higher premiums due to you have pre-diabetes. This isn’t always the case, it will depend upon what your HbA1C readings are and if you are still bordering a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. You are more likely to get standard terms for critical illness cover if your HbA1c is below 42mmol/mol and has been for a while.

Pre-Diabetes & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
If you’ve been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, you may still be eligible for income protection through several insurers. While pre-diabetes isn’t the same as type 2 diabetes, insurers often assess applications in a similar way—focusing on how well your blood sugar levels are managed and whether there are any other health risks involved.
A HbA1C reading under 42mmol/mol will likely see the best options for income protection cover.
In most cases, you’ll need to show that your pre-diabetes is well-controlled, with no associated complications.

Common Questions
Hi, thank you for getting in touch, this is one of many complications we have in the insurance world. Insurers sometimes view medical conditions far differently to medical professionals. When insurers look at conditions like pre-diabetes they look at decades of data and try to determine how likely it is that someone that is pre-diabetic, will become a type 2 diabetic.
Unfortunately a lot of research has shown that many people are unable to reverse pre-diabetes and do go on to develop type 2 diabetes. This means that some insurers do assess an application from pre-diabetics with the mindset that they will become type 2 diabetic at some point.
It comes down to what your HbA1C level is and finding the right insurer. We are more than happy to look into this for you.
