We understand that having high cholesterol, is something that a lot of people have. For many people they may not even know that they have it.
When you apply for life insurance, having high cholesterol in itself, isn’t often a big concern. They times that insurers start to look at applications more closely, is where there are other linked conditions like diabetes.
Insurers also want to know more information if your family has a history of high cholesterol, especially if you have been told that you have familial hypercholesterolaemia.
We are here to help you find the right insurer for your needs, doing all the research on your behalf to find the best insurer for you.
When you apply for life insurance you are going to hear these types of questions:
- When were you diagnosed with high cholesterol?
- What was your latest reading?
- When was this taken?
- What medications do you take?
- Have you, or your parents or siblings had a heart attack?
There is no right or wrong answer to these questions. Your answers will help us to find the right insurer for your individual circumstances.
Life Insurance for people with familial hypercholesterolaemia may be available at standard terms if the condition is well controlled.
If you need a number of medications and/or your overall cholesterol reading is outside of certain levels, the insurer may wish to see a report from your GP about your general health. This is done only with your permission.
Where familial hypercholesterolaemia is not well controlled, you may need to place your life insurance application with a specialist provider who may be able to consider cover. This may result in your life insurance being offered to you at a higher premium.
It is also possible that your life insurance may be postponed until your symptoms stabilise. Some insurers may decline the application. That is why we are here.
We will do the research so that you don’t have to hear that an insurer won’t offer cover. Our expert advisers will find the right insurer to give you the life insurance that you need.
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover for people with familial hypercholesterolaemia will be assessed similarly to that of life insurance. The insurer will want to know how well controlled your cholesterol is, your latest cholesterol readings and when they were taken.
Where your cholesterol is well controlled, some insurers may be able to offer standard terms for critical illness cover.
If your cholesterol is not well controlled or there are other illnesses e.g. a high BMI or a history of heart attacks, the insurer may ask to see a report from your doctor to confirm your health.
Depending upon this report your policy may be accepted at standard or non-standard terms (premium increase). We know that a premium increase doesn’t sound fantastic, but these often aren’t as bad as people think they will be.
There’s no hardship in asking and if the end price isn’t right for you, there are no tie-ins or obligations for you to take out the policy.
Some people with familial hypercholesterolaemia may be declined critical illness cover, if the cholesterol levels are not well controlled or you have a combination of illnesses.
Please do not worry if this is something that you experience. We have access to specialist insurers and will be able to talk you through options that could be useful to you.
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection for people that have familial hypercholesterolaemia will be reviewed on stricter underwriting guides than life insurance and critical illness cover.
Insurers are more likely going to want to see a report from your GP to confirm your overall health. This is done at their own expense and is often a good thing, as you then don’t need to worry that you have missed anything off your medical declarations.
Provided that your cholesterol is well controlled you may be able to secure income protection at standard terms. This will be highly dependent upon the insurer that your application is placed with.
If your cholesterol is not well controlled the insurer may choose to increase the policy premiums. If your cholesterol is not stable or you have a particularly high BMI, some insurers may decline your application.
This is when advice from one of our expert advisers, and our access to specialist insurers, really stands out.
Our experienced advisers will be able to direct and support you in placing your income protection application with an insurer that is right for you.
If you find that the terms for income protection do not meet your circumstances then you may wish to consider Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover. This type of policy provides short term income protection of between 12 and 24 months in the event that you are unable to work due to disability, long term illness or involuntary redundancy.
Accident, sickness and unemployment policies are not medically underwritten so your condition will have no bearing on the terms provided, however anything related to familial hypercholesterolaemia will be excluded from the policy claims set.

“Knowledgable and professional people. Highly recommended. Extremely professional and knowledgable professionals who genuinely want to help. They got me the right life insurance at an excellent price even though I’d had insurance refused twice. Can’t rate them highly enough and highly recommend them.” - 5
